When Weight Loss Can Be a Bad Idea

Weight loss is a popular topic of conversation in today's society; from newspapers and magazines to television and websites, everyone is talking about weight loss. While weight loss is necessary for some, such media hype is causing many young girls (and even boys) to turn to anorexia, bulimia and other eating disorders in a bid to look like the size zero celebrities that taunt them from every news stand and television set. Knowing when you need to lose weight and when you don't is important to ensure you stay healthy and avoid falling foul of a terrible disease.

Losing weight is often a personal decision; but if you are more than 20 pounds overweight then weight loss will be necessary for your health. However, everyone's bodies are different and you should consult your doctor before embarking on any kind of weight loss plan. Your doctor will be able to tell you what your normal weight should be and help you put together a plan to reach that weight through sensible eating and exercise.

It is important for everyone to understand their ideal weight; everyone's bodies are different shapes and just because you are not a size zero like your favourite TV star it doesn't mean that you need to lose weight. It may come as a surprise but models and actresses are quite often airbrushed in photos to make them look slimmer and more toned, it's just a fancy trick. If your body weight is normal then you do not need to lose weight, even if you are a dress size larger than your favourite celebrity.

There will be times in your life when you will gain weight, and this is natural and healthy. Weight loss is especially common during puberty and the following years. You may gain a few pounds but you've probably grown a few inches too. If you have been working out at the gym then you should expect to gain some weight as muscles are heavier than fat.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, you should not try and lose weight simply because someone makes a rude comment about your appearance. As long as you weight is in the normal range for someone of your height and age then you should be happy with your weight. People who make such rude comments usually have some sort of insecurity themselves and can safely be ignored. Learn to love your body, eat a healthy diet and don't worry about how much you weigh.
