Low-Tech Weight Loss Tools That Really Work

"I write, I write, and I write some more. And all I see at the end of the day is what I already knew - I eat too much."

Many dieters dread hearing those two simple words: food diary. It is true that weight loss journals and food diaries require time, attention, planning, and analysis - but if used properly, they can be one of your greatest allies in the battle against obesity.

Perhaps you ate an extra high-fat snack yesterday because you've developed a habit of passing by the candy jar at work, or maybe you skipped a meal and binged at dinner because you were too busy and stressed to take a lunch break.

Whatever your reason for overeating, a food diary requires you to take a moment and think about what you're doing. Studies show that the average person recalls only half of what she eats, probably because most of us eat unconsciously - nibbling on ingredients as we make dinner, snacking while on the phone or in the car, grazing on high-fat snacks while watching television or reading a book.

Whereas your memory may be unpredictable, at best, in recalling why last week was such a struggle or what you ate for breakfast the day you went off the plan, it's difficult to deny the cold, hard facts once they are memorialized in writing. Although it can be difficult to get honest about our eating, understanding the extent and causes of the problem is the first step toward finding a solution.

In addition to tracking food intake, keeping a diary is also a powerful tool because:

* It lets you structure one day at a time by planning what you will eat and then recording your actual food intake.

* It reveals your relationship with food so you can identify events, emotions, or people that prompt you to overeat as well as pinpoint specific behaviors to change.

* It gives you goals to aim for in terms of how and what you eat (such as planning activities during times that you tend to overeat or avoiding certain "tempting" situations).

* It presents you with options for making small, manageable changes in your daily life.

Eating without a plan is like going to the grocery store without a list - you're just asking to get a lot more than you bargained for. If you eat only what you feel like eating in a given moment, you're not likely to choose the fruits, vegetables, and whole grains that your body needs. When you know your diary is going to hold you accountable for everything you eat, you have a better chance of staying cognizant of your calorie consumption throughout the day.

For most people, overweight or obesity isn't a simple issue of liking food too much - it's a complicated blend of poor habits, difficulty coping with emotions, and years of learning to use food in non-nutritional ways. But once you identify bad habits and learned behaviors using your diary as a self-evaluation tool, the good news is they can be changed. And whatever challenges are presented to you, you know you have the tools at your disposal to produce the healthiest, happiest you.

Significance of Weight Loss

With the improvement of people's standards of living, people increase their requirement for eating and diet. They have richer and richer foods on their table. However, the amount of fatties is larger and larger. Nowadays weight loss gains the increasing popularity among the young and middle-aged women. In order to make themselves pretty-looking, they try many different ways of losing weight.

Weight loss that occurs without a clear reason is a concern and needs to be evaluated. There are several possible reasons for weight loss to occur when a person has heartburn.

You avoid foods that make the heartburn worse. If you eat less or the amount of calories in the food you eat is decreased, weight loss can occur.

Untreated heartburn over a period of time can cause a narrowing (stricture) in the esophagus, which can make swallowing difficult. This can also make it difficult to eat enough calories to maintain your weight.
Unexpected weight loss and difficulty swallowing may also be a symptom of cancer of the esophagus.

Some people put their faith in exercise to loss weight. But the trouble with exercise is that it only works up an appetite. Other people believe in slim pills and special clothes that make you sweat. It would be nice if they worked, but they don't.

Serious medical conditions can cause weight loss for no reason. If you have lost 5 lb or 5% of your body weight over the last 6 to 12 months, you need to be evaluated by your health professional.

Weight Loss - Using Aerobic Exercises to Lose Weight

Everyday, it seems, we hear of some new truths, which may contradict what we have always accepted about a certain element of health and fitness. This can be related to the amount of minerals or vitamins you should or should not consume, the amount of exercise, particularly aerobic exercise, you should have and so on.

What is Aerobic Exercise?

Some popular examples of aerobic exercise include walking, cycling, aerobic dancing and swimming. The exercises should include leg muscles, hips, and arm muscles along with large volumes of inhalation and exhalation.

Advantages of Aerobic Exercise

There is a whole range of benefits that come from doing aerobic exercises including better blood circulation and respiration. Other benefits are enhanced muscle shape and tone plus a feeling of good overall health. But the most significant benefit of aerobic exercise is its effect on weight loss.

A Common Truth Disproved

Until recently is was generally assumed that if you exercised with medium intensity for prolonged periods of time this would be the most effective means to burn off fat. However, several studies and findings from fitness experts have shown that continuous hours of aerobic exercise such as jogging is not as successful in burning off fat as it was once thought to be. Many people report that even after long periods of jogging they still had excessive fat on their bodies.

Best Fat Burning Method

Instead of these long periods of exercise it was found that high-intensity exercise for shorter periods was not only less time consuming but also it proved more effective for fat loss. The reasoning is that the metabolism is kept at a higher level for a longer period of time, which resulted in more calories burned. Some examples of these high-intensity exercises are weight training and aerobic intervals exercise.

Another great exercise is spinning on a stationary bike. This should be done for a period of not less than 20 minutes along with sprints of 30 to 60 seconds duration. This is an easy routine to do and won't impact your joints like jogging on a hard surface. If you enjoy running and you aren't bothered with joint pain you're better off on a surface such as grass, dirt, or a running track. Try to avoid running on hard surfaces as much as possible to prevent developing joint and spinal injuries.

Aerobic Exercise and Your Heart

In addition to weight loss your cardiovascular system stands to benefit tremendously from your aerobic exercises. Your heart, of course, is a muscle and is capable of working for many decades. Your heart does not have to be trained like other muscles in your body unless you participate in endurance events. It may be necessary to train the heart to withstand severe emotional and physical stress. High intensity exercises will help your heart to endure many challenging situations.

A sunrise in Florida. Teens with lower levels of vitamin D have a higher risk of heart disease and diabetes and are significantly more likely to have high blood pressure and blood sugar, a study released Wednesday has found. The body produces vitamin D in response to exposure to the sun and it can also be found in a number of foods such as fortified milk, fish and eggs.(AFP/File/Don Emmert)AP - New research in teenagers links low levels of vitamin D to high blood pressure and high blood sugar, which can lead to ominous early health problems. The "sunshine" vitamin is needed to keep bones strong, but recent research has linked vitamin D to other possible health benefits. The teen study confirms results seen in adults, linking low levels with risk factors for heart disease, the researchers said.

Secrets To Successful Weight Loss

Do you find dieting easy? Deciding what diet to go with and sticking to it can be a nightmare. There are so many different types of diets you can feel like you are being pulled from pillar to post when trying to decide on a diet and stick to it.

Usually, you start a diet and do really well for a few days and then temptation comes tearing into your life and you cheat on your diet, and then you cheat some more and then some more and then you give up on your diet because it didnt work.

Ill be truthful with you now. Anyone can lose weight on ANY diet if they stick to it.
Thats true, the South Beach, GI, Atkins or whatever diet WILL WORK! But it will only work if you stick to it and are consistent. As I said above, most people stick to a diet for a few days before they begin to waver.

Secret 1 : Stick To ONE Diet Rigidly And DO NOT Waver

Junk food is delicious. Chocolate, cake and biscuits tastes delicious and you really enjoy eating them. The trouble is, most of this snack food is extremely unhealthy and full of calories. Simply by cutting out the junk snack food you will find you lose weight very easily.

Secret 2 : Cut Out The Junk Food

Most people who diet just cut their calorie intake. Doing this sends a very powerful message to your body that says DANGER famine coming and so your body stores fat so you can get through the famine. Successful dieters not only reduce their calorie intake, but they also increase their level of activity. They add exercise to their daily regime, which helps to burn off excess calories. Find an exercise routine (or routines) that you enjoy and exercise for 20-30 minutes a day.

Secret 3 : Daily Exercise

If I asked you what you ate yesterday, would you be able to tell me? We are all conditioned to put food in our mouths automatically without really paying much attention to what we are eating. Its incredibly easy to eat an awful lot of junk without realizing it. So keep a journal of what you are eating. Carry a small note book with you everywhere you go and write down in it anything and everything you eat. This will help you to realize exactly what you are eating and help you to understand what foods work best for you.

Secret 4 : Food Diary

A significant percentage of dieters have very unrealistic goals with their diet. For example, they realize that next week / month is the prom / holiday / company party / other event and that they have to get rid of so many pounds by then. Usually this weight loss goal can only be achieved through amputation! Make sure you set realistic, achievable weight loss goals. If you do not you will dishearten yourself and be setting yourself up for failure.

Secret 5 : Be Realistic With Your Weight Loss Targets

These five secrets will help you to lose weight successfully with any diet or weight loss program. Take them on board and apply them to your life and you will find yourself able to lose weight quickly and easily.

Take Time to Eat Lunch and Lose Weight

Losing weight is hard work, and a lack of focus can keep us from getting the results we want. While breakfast is the most commonly skipped meal of the day, some of us blaze through lunch carelessly without paying attention to what we put into our bodies. It's essential to give this midday meal just as much attention as we do any other meal we eat. Many times our lunchtime habits sabotage our success.

Most of us work, meaning that we can only have lunch at certain times throughout the day. What's even worse, some people are so busy that they grab a quick bite and eat at their desk, never allowing the body to rest, relax and enjoy a nutritious meal. The best thing you can do for yourself is to take a lunch break at the same time every day. Get out of the office if possible. Go for a walk afterwards if you have enough time, to kick start quick weight loss. But stop working long enough to concentrate on your meal.

Another bad habit we get into is eating out every day. While it may be convenient to slip down to the cafeteria or vending machine to grab a bite, this can wreak havoc on our waistline. Or sometimes, in an effort to be social, we go out with friends during lunch. Try to keep your lunchtime outings to once a week, and pick healthier foods when you do eat out. Always know where your local grocery store is, and if you have to go out, hit the salad bar or deli instead. This option is much healthier and many times less expensive than a sit-down meal.

Lastly, try not to bring leftovers from last night's dinner to work for lunch. For many of us, dinner is the largest meal of the day, and consuming the same food for lunch and dinner can pack on the pounds. When grocery shopping, choose light nutritious foods like yogurt, fruit and nuts. Many create healthy wraps instead of using bread, and some opt to bring only salad. Keep from overeating with a natural appetite suppressant like hoodia, and keep portions down to reasonable levels.

Best-Kept Weight Loss Secrets-Do You believe This

My mother always used to say there were no weight loss secrets. "It's simple! You just put less in your mouth and get off your fat backside a bit more often!" She always did have a way with words, my Mom. But she was only partly right because, some overweight folks I know are very active and are extremely careful with what they eat, yet they still seem to carry the extra pounds despite it all. Then there are those twigs of society who can't put on an ounce no matter what they eat. My sister's a bit like that. Honestly, I've seem more fat on a cold chip.

Because of the way modern society portrays who we are and how we should look, there's an awful lot of pressure on individuals to buy into the slimming game. The problem with this, is that even skeletal people think they're fat, and for them to loose extra pounds in darn right dangerous in some cases. It wasn't so many years ago, that shop mannequins had a bit of meat on their plastic but even these are a flat as a carpenter's board these days.

But all this aside there are growing problems in western societies, not only with overweight adults, but we're seeing a lot of heavy kids around nowadays, and this is really not good. But it all starts with the adults, in particular Mum & Dad. The kids tend to feast on the same stuff as their parents do, so it's little wonder we're facing a major crisis with child obesity. So what are the weight loss secrets that we all yearn for? Perhaps my mother was right and we are becoming a donut munching generations of couch potatoes!

There are always new claims to weight loss secrets, but a true secret is about as probable as a cure for male pattern baldness. If there was a cure-for-all with regards to hair loss, then we'd never see another bald head in our lives (unless through choice of course!). Same goes for weight loss secrets. These can better be described as weight loss plans and there are many of them around, some better than others.

Many folks are so desperate to shed those pounds that they go to extremes. Weight loss pill, lipo suction, having the stomach stitched etc, but these really are last resort measures and all possible alternatives for weight loss should be checked out first, as some of the above mentioned can be potentially dangerous.

The secret to successful weight loss lies with you. Or my mother! Which is not really a secret at all. Despite all the fancy diets and eating plans, there is only one tried and tested method that has never really gone away, and that is to eat smaller portions, and get plenty of regular exercise. Of course, eat healthily too. If you cut down to say having 2 double cheeseburgers and large fries instead of your usual 3, well, it's not really going to help much is it. Additionally, if you embark on a new and healthy eating plan and regular exercise regime in the spring time, but decide to slump back into the couch and return your old eating habits during those winter months, then you may find you will put on more weight than you've ever had before.

Weight loss is just a beginning, but weight maintenance is the solution for a new and slimmer you. Not only will you feel great but you'll look good too. If you're one of those folks who just can't seem to get real slender, then perhaps you're supposed to be a little on the large size. We are all different shapes, weights, and heights, and if someone carries a little extra meat on their bones, but are fit and active regardless, then perhaps the secret for happiness is to simply lose what you can, accept what you can't, and know the difference.

Forget a lifetime of chasing the next weight loss secret and trying to look like string bean. Just concentrate on being you and enjoy who you are. A healthy mind is a healthy body and when you have both, you become naturally active (which is part of being human), and active people are happy people.

Best Bets For Weight Loss in 2009

Weight loss seems to be on everyone's mind during those post-holiday weeks in early January, and who can blame us all for worrying? It seems like the entire month of December is spent on one nonstop smorgasboard of fattening, sugary, salty foods.

Sure, they taste good, but we end up paying in pounds (on our body, not the British currency) later on, and we all know that especially the older we get, those pounds go on easy, but become much harder to take off.

However, even if you think you have the most stubborn body fat, and you feel like losing weight takes more time than you'd like to waste on eating salads with no dressing and lean meats, rest assured that there are diets out there that anyone can lose weight on.

It just depends on what is the least painless for you personally. Do you hate carbs? Go on a low carb diet or carb conscious diet like the Zone or the South Beach Diet.

If you don't care for meats and proteins, you may want to opt for a vegetarian based diet, or even a vegan diet for that matter. These types of diets tend to rely mostly on whole grains, nuts and other sources of fiber and substance that don't involve any type of animal meat of animal byproducts.

What about those diets for people who don't like to cook, and need to have portion control and calorie control? Well, in this day and age of everything you could possibly want at the click of a button or movement of a computer mouse, you can even get healthy, reduced calorie, and portion controlled meals sent right to your door.

Although these options may not be something that some people consider cost effective, if you really stick to the menu of foods that are shipped to you, and don't veer off the menu and start spending money on fast food or restaurant foods, then you actually should find that you're spending about the same amount as you would have on the groceries and restaurant meals that you normally would be eating anyways.

For those that are a little more adventurous and not averse to the more "extreme" diets, there are fasting diets that some swear by not only to jump start their weight loss, but also to give them an internal "cleansing" of sorts.

Although these types of diets are criticized for their extremism, and some even decry them as harmful to the health of anyone who does them, there are devotees that believe these types of deprivation diets give them their health back, and more importantly, take the focus off food in their life for a while, allowing them to channel their creative efforts everywhere else.

There are always those good old stand by diets that I think everyone and their brother has tried at some point, like the cabbage soup diet, which is famed for it's use as a medical weight loss tool for those that are going to undergo some sort of surgical or medical procedure in the next few weeks.

It is known for it's quick results, but a lot of people complain that it not only gives them zero variety since that's all they can eat all day, but also that it gives them excess gas (which is of course embarrassing and not a desirable side effect of any diet).

My personal recommendation is that no matter what the type of diet you decide to try in 2009 to help you attain and maintain your ideal weight and gain your health back, you may want to buy a good set of self hypnosis CD's for weight loss.

These can not only help you to get the internal willpower you need to lose weight and keep on losing weight, but they also work on such a subliminal level that you don't even notice that you're exercising the correct behavior that allows you to lose weight, keep on losing, and maintain your ideal weight.

McClatchy Newspapers - WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama plans on Monday to lift President George W.
